River Crossing Logic: Ferry Everyone Across Without a Disaster
Drag animals and cargo into the boat and ferry them across a river two banks at a time. Each failed crossing exposes a hidden rule, training you to plan several moves ahead instead of reacting.
The Hardest Move Is Rowing Something Back Across
Most players grab whatever is nearest the boat and only later notice the goat has already eaten the cabbage. The real block is invisible: you have to hold the whole set of 'who-eats-whom' rules in mind while a single trip changes which pairs are now stranded together. Dragging each passenger onto the boat and watching the far bank fill up makes that hidden constraint visible and reversible right on screen. When a move fails, the animation shows exactly which pair was left alone, so you learn to infer the safe sequence backward from the goal. Bringing an item back—counterintuitive at first—becomes an obvious tactic once the picture makes the deadlock concrete.
Deductive Planning for Grades 3–7: Reasoning Under Constraints
This puzzle grows out of the sorting and rule-following younger students practice (MP1, sticking with a hard problem) and feeds directly into constructing and defending a solution path (MP3). By forcing players to find the structure behind which pairs conflict (MP7), it prepares them for the multi-step reasoning behind algebraic problem solving and proof.

Steps and completion rules
- Select a passenger on the farmer’s bank, or select none to cross alone.
- Before crossing, check which unattended pairs would remain on both banks.
- Plan safe return trips until all four characters are on the right bank.

Record both banks after each trip and explain why the goat sometimes has to be brought back.
