Plenty of learners "know" their eights by quietly doubling: 8×4 is double sixteen, so 32, and 8×8 is double that again, 64. On paper the chain works fine. It falls apart the instant 8×4=32 and 8×8=64 both slide across the grid and a move has to happen now — there is no room to double step by step while a distractor closes the path.
