Every Sprout Is Born Half-Dead: The Degree-3 Ceiling Is the Real Puzzle
Most players stall the moment they realize a fresh sprout is not a free asset — it arrives at degree 2, so it can accept only one more line before it is closed forever. Because no node may pass degree 3, each move you make quietly shrinks the pool of legal connections for both players. The non-crossing rule adds a second layer: every route you draw carves the plane into regions, and nodes stranded in different regions can never be joined. Dragging endpoint to endpoint on screen makes this visible — you watch capacity drain and regions seal, which turns a doodle into a forced-move calculation. The player who leaves the opponent with no legal route wins, so foresight beats greed.
Deductive Reasoning and Structural Thinking for the 5–8 Classroom
Sprout Lines leans on the practice standards rather than one content strand: players construct and defend a winning argument (MP.3), hunt for the structure hiding in degrees and regions (MP.7), and generalize the parity rule that decides who runs out of moves (MP.8). It bridges earlier work with points, lines, and planes in the coordinate plane (5.G, 6.G) toward the graph and deductive reasoning students meet in later combinatorics and proof.

Start in Three Steps
- Player 1 selects two different nodes.
- The game checks crossings, overlaps, node clearance, and degree limits before growing a sprout.
- Alternate until no legal route remains.
Teacher and Parent Note
After each move, name the degree of both endpoints and the new sprout. Older students can compare starting nodes with total move count across games.
