The Winning Move Is the Number You Leave, Not the One You Take
Most players fix on their own count, grab whatever feels big, and lose without seeing why. This game exposes the real lever: after a few defeats, students notice the bot wins whenever it can hand them a total sitting on a multiple of four. Because you pick only 1, 2, or 3 and see the reply immediately, the four-step control gap becomes visible instead of abstract. Switching between avoid-21 and take-the-last-counter modes forces you to re-derive the safe position rather than memorize one answer. Backward reasoning stops being a slogan and becomes a move you can actually make.
Why Multiples of Four Unlock Number Theory for Grades 4–8
Its foundation is early factor-and-multiple fluency (4.OA.B.4), extended through pattern generation (4.OA.C.5); from there students move toward remainder thinking that opens into modular arithmetic. Recognizing that only the total mod 4 matters is exactly the structural noticing behind MP.7, preparing older students for divisibility rules and number-theory strategy.
